About the Valley of Tears

The Valle de las Lágrimas (Valley of Tears) lies deep in the Andes, on the border between Argentina and Chile. This remote valley became known worldwide due to the tragic yet heroic story of the 1972 crash of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.

The aircraft, carrying a rugby team and their friends and relatives, crashed in the Andes during a storm. For 72 days, the survivors endured extreme conditions of cold, hunger, and isolation, before two of them, Fernando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, undertook an extraordinary trek across the mountains to seek help. Their courage and determination led to the rescue of the remaining survivors and became one of the most remarkable stories of resilience and human spirit.

Today, the wreckage of the plane remains in the valley as a silent memorial. Reaching this place is both a physical challenge and a deeply emotional experience, combining adventure, remembrance, and reflection.

Two Ways to Experience the Valley

Trekking Expedition (on foot): Retrace history by walking through the Andes as the survivors once did. This option demands physical effort and offers a powerful sense of connection to their journey.

Horseback Expedition: Ride across valleys and ridges following the same route with the support of pack horses, blending adventure with the gaucho traditions of the region.

Both options share the same itinerary, camps, and cultural depth – the only difference is how you choose to live the journey.
