Western Horse Trek — 2 Days / 1 Night

Barreal, Calingasta Valley – San Juan, Argentina

Tucked beneath the towering Andes and surrounded by the open skies of the Calingasta Valley, Barreal is a place where time seems to move more slowly. Life here follows the rhythm of nature, the seasons, and the quiet footsteps of horses on dusty trails.

This two-day western-style horseback experience is designed for those seeking connection: with the land, with rural traditions, and with the timeless spirit of the Andes. From ancient petroglyphs carved into stone to the smell of asado cooking under the stars, this journey offers an authentic and intimate window into Argentina’s high desert soul.

Ideal for intermediate to experienced riders, this trek brings together stunning landscapes, local food and wine, and the warmth of gaucho culture.

Day 1 – Journey to Barreal & Rural Life

We begin our journey in the morning with a scenic drive west from Mendoza, following the sinuous Andean Route through Cacheuta, the turquoise waters of the Potrerillos Dam, and the high plains of Uspallata.

Along the way, we visit Cerro Tunduqueral, one of the region’s most fascinating archaeological sites. Here, engraved into the volcanic rock, are petroglyphs created by ancient Andean cultures, offering a glimpse into their cosmology, beliefs, and daily life.

After a hearty lunch in Uspallata, we continue on to Barreal, a quiet village embraced by mountains and desert winds. Upon arrival, we settle into a charming countryside lodge and take time to relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings.

As evening falls, we gather around the fire for a traditional Argentine asado, sharing grilled meats, local wines, and stories beneath a sky filled with stars. The silence of the night, broken only by the crackle of firewood, invites us into the slower rhythm of life in the Andes.

Day 2 – Riding Across the Valley

After breakfast at the lodge, we meet our horses and saddle up for a western-style ride into the heart of the Barreal countryside.

We follow quiet trails lined with willows, crossing creeks and winding dirt roads that reveal the authentic rural landscape of this region. The air is filled with the scent of native herbs, and the Red Pointed Hill rises in the distance, a natural landmark that guides our journey.

As we ride, we pass working farms, open plains, and grazing livestock—a living expression of the gaucho way of life that still thrives in these parts. The ride is steady but relaxed, allowing us to take in the scenery and connect with the horses and land.

Midway through the day, we stop for a picnic-style lunch in nature, featuring regional products: cured meats, local cheeses, olives, fresh bread, and wine served under the open sky.

After lunch, we begin our return ride to Barreal, arriving at the lodge in the late afternoon. There, we refresh and prepare for the drive back to Mendoza, bringing with us a taste of rural Argentina and the calm only found in the high desert.
